Fox 25/48's Erin O’Brien explains what there is to do at one of western Wisconsin’s most famous parks.
Hundreds of thousands of people come here to Perrot State Park in Trempealeau each year to enjoy spectacular views like this and much more.
From hiking, to camping, to canoeing, and biking. And snow shoeing and cross country skiing during the winter, there's lots to do on Perrot State Park's 1300 acres of land.
"We have people of all different nationalities. We're also getting a lot of family groups coming in, hiking clubs, birding enthusiasts, people that generally like the outdoors, small hunting population that likes to use the park in the fall and the spring, and then a lot of winter recreational enthusiasts as well."
Park Ranger Justin Wershofen, who grew up in nearby Holmen, calls his job a dream come true.
"I've been coming here since I’ve been a little boy, to be able to transition my life into actually working for the park and not only going ahead and keeping the park the way I remember it but bringing it into the future as well."
The park was founded 99 years ago. The Civilian Conservation Corps built much of what still remains today.
"Civilian Conservation Corps was a group of young men back during the depression era which were given jobs which were federally funded to go ahead and do a lot of different challenging work such as building trails, planting trees and just keep the economy going."
What sets this park apart from others are its bluffs.
And Perrot’s most famous bluff is Brady’s Bluff, the highest point in the park. Though the park is just minutes away from downtown Trempealeau, Wershofen says doesn't feel that way.
"Favorite thing about this park is the ability to get up and be able to see just way beyond the normal regular road level. You get up and away from the traffic, kind of that serenity floating amongst the eagles and turkey vultures and things along those lines. It's a very private park you're not going to inundated with too many people and you can get away from it all."
