Gundersen Health System has announced plans to build a new clinic in Tomah. Fox 25/48's Zach Prelutsky reports what the new facility could mean for people in the area.
While driving on Interstate 90 around Tomah, you may have noticed a construction site for a new Tomah Memorial Hospital. In the coming months, you'll notice another site in the area as Gundersen Health System announced a plan for a new clinic in Tomah.
The new clinic will be three times larger than the current one and will offer a variety of services such as oncology, family medicine, a pharmacy, and more. The new 77,000 square foot facility will be built adjacent to the new Tomah Memorial Hospital which is under construction right now
"We've always had a good relationship with Tomah Memorial Hospital, as I mentioned, and they are wanting to bring the best care to the community. So as a result, we're putting our clinic next to theirs for the convenience of the patient as well as working closely with them in many services."
The current clinic opened back in 1995 and can't support any more new services being added. In a release, Gundersen Health System CEO Scott Rathgaber says, "Construction of the new clinic strengthens our commitment to the health and well-being for residents of Tomah and the surrounding area and to provide high-quality healthcare close to home."
The new clinic allowing patients to receive services at one location was a factor for the new clinic, which those involved say used to be a burden for some people.
"It's very important because people, as you mentioned, do not have to travel and our key is to bring the care to the person's home in the community as opposed to them traveling to other cities to get the care."
Construction is expected to begin in late spring of next year and be completed in the summer of 2019, around the same time as the hospital.
