EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – Two men have been charged in connection to a shooting near two schools on Eau Claire’s South side, including one suspect who fled and spent 2-and-a-half hours standing in the Chippewa River.
Eight counts in all were handed down today against 20-year-old Le’Fon Cantrell and 17-year-old Xavier Luce.
They are tied to a reported shooting back in April that happened near south middle school and Meadowview Elementary School. It happened on the 24-hundred block of sessions street. A complaint filed today says officers determined at least three shots were fired.
No one was injured.
Police say last week, Cantrell voluntarily went to the Eau Claire Police Department to talk about his involvement in the shooting, but he later took off and ran into the Chippewa River.
The complaint says Cantrell then yelled at officers to enter the river so he could wrestle with them. He also yelled at officers to shoot him.
Cantrell did eventually get out of the river but escaped again before being re-captured.
Police say Luce was arrested the same day. Both had their initial appearances in Eau Claire County Court Tuesday morning.
