SPARTA, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – A man accused of attacking three people with an axe earlier this month was charged Monday.

36-year-old Thomas Aspseter appeared in Monroe County Court via Zoom and is charged with first degree intentional homicide, two counts of attempted homicide, and two counts of aggravated battery in the June sixth attack in the town of Sparta.

Aspseter is accused of attacking 87-year-old Bernard Waite, 76-year-old Michael Waite and 73-year-old Margaret Waite with an axe before turning a gun on himself.

Aspseter used to live with Bernard and his wife, who is Aspseter’s grandmother.

According to the criminal complaint, the three had arrived at the home after being away during the weekend to find Aspseter had broken into the house.

He was told to leave and a short time later, the attack happened.

Michael is still hospitalized. Margaret was treated and released.

Aspseter was given a 1-million-dollar cash bond. An initial appearance is scheduled for July 2.
