A clinic inside a La Crosse elementary school is changing the way students can get medical care. Tonight, Fox 25/48’s Erin O’Brien explains why the new clinic inside Northside elementary is not your average school nurse’s office.
Just behind the front office of Northside elementary is the clinic that’s taking medical care for students to the next level.
‘Your Northside Neighborhood Clinic’ will be staffed by doctor Ted Thompson and his team from Neighborhood Family Clinics. They’ll provide basic medical services like wellness exams and upper respiratory checks, all at no charge to students at Northside and Coulee Montessori. They can also write prescriptions or make referrals for patients.
“If you’re not feeling well, you’re not likely to be real excited to be a learner today. If you’re not fed, or you feel hungry, you’re maybe not excited to be a learner today. So we’re trying to take care of some things that might help mitigate or just make it more convenient to ensure that our students are healthy when they come into our classrooms.”
The clinic is a 501c3 and accepts monetary donations. Kelly Mayer is president of the organization and also has five kids who attend Northside elementary.
“For me as a parent to have this here means that my children can go see a doctor really simple. We’re already here, we’re already doing things here, and this is our neighborhood. And I can say, okay, you don’t feel well, I know that there’s some great staff here that are going to take care of you.”
The clinic is open Tuesday through Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30 pm.
Right now the clinic serves just students of Northside elementary and Coulee Montessori, but Dr. Thompson says they plan to expand it to include parents and families.
“We’re also trying to expand and we’ll probably be adding nutritional counseling, psychological counseling, and chiropractic care, so we’re going to be expanding but we had to start somewhere, and this was a good start.”
