US customs and border protection announced Tuesday that another child has died in its custody.
According to the CBP an eight-year-old Guatemalan boy died at a hospital in New Mexico on Christmas. The boy was detained with his father. A border agent noticed the child was ill on Monday and was taken to the hospital but was released after medical staff found he had a fever. Later that evening– they say the boy became even more sick and was taken back to the hospital, where he died. We do not know the official cause of death.
This child is the second Guatemalan child to die in CBP custody this month. On December eighth– seven-year-old Jakelin Caal Maquin died from an illness while in custody with her father. Some have called for an investigation into her death.
