A Political War of Words Over Puerto Rico

A political war of words threatens to derail the recovery in Puerto Rico. Ten days after a direct hit from Hurricane Maria. Puerto Rico still sits in dire shape. Aid is slowly trickling in but the power is still out in most areas

And residents are complaining about shortages of food and water.

President Trump is praising the federal response, while taking a shot at local leaders here, tweeting, quote, “They want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort.”

Meanwhile, Puerto Rico’s governor and the mayor of San Juan say they’re trying to keep the focus on saving lives.  More federal resources are starting to arrive here and the Army Corps of Engineers is assessing the long-term damage to the island’s infrastructure.

President Trump is scheduled to go to Puerto Rico on Tuesday to get a first-hand look at the damage and the federal response.
