October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and a local organization is honoring victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
The Bolton Refuge House in Eau Claire held its annual day of unity where domestic abuse survivors were recognized.
Along with food and games, the event included an introduction to a new initiative called the Purple Porch Project.
The goal of the project is to remember both survivors and those that have lost their lives to domestic violence.
“Purple Porch Project is a project where we encourage the community to put purple lights or purple decorations, or purple up their porch to show their support for domestic violence awareness month and kind of show that they care about our cause,” said Bolton refuge House intern, Paige Panzenhagen.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice reports in 2017 there were more than 32,000 victims of domestic violence.
