Nearly twenty-seven years after his abduction, the remains of eleven year old Jacob Wetterling have been found in Minnesota.
Earlier tonight the Stearns County sheriff’s office sent out a news release confirming Wetterling’s remains have been located. A medical examiner identified the remains in Ramsey County Minnesota earlier today. The release goes on to say additional DNA testing will be performed. John Croman reports.
The key that unlocked the Jacob Wetterling mystery began with another child victim, Jared Scheierl, who was abducted by Danny Heinrich in Cold Spring 10 months before Jacob disappeared. Today, Scheierl confirmed with KARE that Danny Heinrich led authorities to a farm in Stearns County, where human remains were found.
Jacob’s mother, Patty Wetterling, left no doubt in a text message to our Caroline Lowe “All I can confirm is that Jacob has been found and our hearts are broken.”
Reaction has poured in, starting with the Wetterling Foundation, part of the legacy of Jacob’s abduction.
“We are in deep grief. We didn’t want Jacob’s story to end this way. The Wetterling’s had a choice to walk into bitterness and anger or to walk into a light of what could be, a light of hope. Their choice changed the world.”
We also heard today from Dan Rassier, the Cold Springs music teacher and Wetterling neighbor, who professed his innocence after his farm was dug up by authorities in 2010.
“My dad would’ve called it a very sad miracle. It’s just devastating to hear that there is no hope, that he is gone, and he was gone for a long time apparently. It’s very sad. My family’s thoughts are with the Wetterling’s, and the kids that grew up with Jacob. I mean, just think about it. All those kids.”
Plenty of sadness coming out of the Wetterling’s hometown of St. Joseph tonight. Some leaving bouquets of flowers at the Wetterling home with cards and messages of encouragement. In the Minnesota, people are trying to come to grips with the news. Some say they were moved to tears.
“Here I was at a gas station and the lady said I heard some breaking news my head and it didn’t go through my head and when she said it was like in tears you know it was bad but a relief also were so many weird everybody has been waiting to hear where is he and maybe this will bring in more awareness of the people.”
Authorities say they are in the process of evaluating new evidence in their investigation. More detailed information is expected next week.
