Child Care Woes, Popular Baby Names

Wisconsin child care experts say low wages and a lack of benefits are making it difficult for child care centers to attract and retain workers, particularly in rural areas. Experts say child care centers are competing for employees with school districts, which have better compensation packages. A spokeswoman for the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families says they are working to address the challenges, by developing a stipend program that gives early-education workers a wage stipend for staying in their fields, and by starting programs to help high school students earn certificates to work in child care.

The most popular baby names of the year are in for Gundersen Health System. So far in 2018, Gundersen Health System in La Crosse has delivered 1,663 babies. This year’s deliveries include 791 girls and 872 boys and 38 sets of twins. The most popular girl names for Gundersen newborns in 2018 include: Evelyn, Emma, Harper, Avery and Elizabeth. The most popular boy names were Noah, Oliver, William, Henry, and Theodore.
