Friday marked the start of the MVC opener as Aquinas traveled across town to take on the Onalaska Hilltoppers. Both teams entered the night with a 1-1 record. As the rain held off, it was sure to be a good night of high school football.
The first quarter started off slow, but quickly became an Onalaska dominated quarter. Austin Larson would drop back and pass to Hank Olsen who would take it in the endzone for a Hilltopper TD. Kaley Manglitz would convert the extra point and Onalaska would go up 7-0.
With 3:47 left to go in the first, Onalaska would convert their second touchdown with a 57 yard from Larson to Nathan Lubinsky putting them up 14-0 at the end of the quarter.
Onalaska continued their dominance in the second quarter with a 29 yard touchdown pass from Larson to Ray Heilman to put the Hilltoppers up 21-0. But Onalaska wasn’t done yet, just a few plays later with 7:50 remaining in the quarter Alex Franzini would go 67 yards all the way to the endzone to expand the Hilltopper lead to 28-0.
With 2:48 remaining before the half Onalaska is still rolling, Larsen connects with Heilman with a 52 yard pass and the Hilltoppers showing their dominance lead 35-8.
With 10 seconds to go in the half, Aquinas finally answers with a touchdown pass from Gavin Wetzel to Jacob Savoldelli, to Blugolds would convert the two point conversion making it a 35-8 halftime score.
Onalaska dominated the Blugolds winning the game 52-8 and advancing to a 2-1 overall record and a 1-0 record in conference play.
Onalaska travels to La Crosse Logan next week and Aquinas will take on Central.
