For more than 90 years La Crosse Logan and La Crosse Central have been battling to be the top dog in the city, and it is an opportunity for players to make memories that will be discussed at reunions for years to come. It’s the Battle for the Ark of Victory. Up until the 2017 season Logan controlled the Ark, until Central won it at Logan in 2017.
What a game it was at Roger Harring Stadium on the UW-La Crosse Campus on Friday night. The Stands were packed, and the crowds were roaring. Logan was hungry to get the Ark back, Central hungry to keep the Ark.
It was a show of the defensive teams from both sides. In the opening drive Central was able to hold Logan to a field goal. Central would get their shot to prove they are the champs and the Ark belongs on Losey Blvd. With 3:09 left to go Jon Davis would go long to Steve Cross and with a converted two-point conversion Central goes up 8-3.
It would be a lot of back and forth and strong showing from both defenses all through the second. Several opportunities arose for both teams, but neither were able to convert until the quarter was winding down. With 1:02 until the half it was a beautiful pass from Johnny Davis to connect with Jordan Davis the endzone, and with another converted two-point conversion, Central went up 16-3 going into the half.
The third quarter proved to be the best of the four, with Logan showing a strong defense holding Central for most of the quarter.
With 7:14 left in the quarter, Logan’s offense started coming through. Quarterback Calvin Malvin would scramble and rush into the endzone for an 8 yard TD and with the extra point good, Logan only trails by six, 16-10.
With 2:53 left in the quarter, Central’s Steven Cross would cross the endzone for a 5 yard run, and with the converted two point conversion, Central now leads 22-10, which would ultimately be the last of the scoring, as the fourth remained scoreless.
For the second year in a row, the Ark belongs to the Central Red Raiders, who are now 2-1 in conference play.
