The crisp cool air, leaves changing color, it’s the smell of football and in MVC action Friday, Holmen traveled to Aquinas with the game being held on the campus of UW-La Crosse. It was homecoming for the Blugolds.
In the first quarter, Holmen received the kickoff and it wouldn’t take long for them to score, with about a minute into play Shane Roth would take it in to the endzone for the Vikings and Holmen quickly goes up 7-0. On the kickoff, Aquinas would fumble and the Vikings immediately takeover on the 24 yard line and it would only take another short minute and the Vikings would score again with a beautiful 14 yard run by Andrew Fisher into the endzone, the Vikings with back to back TDs lead 14-0 over the Blugolds.
Although Aquinas had several opportunities in the first, but would ultimately fail to score.
With 9:15 left to go in the first, Holmen comes rolling through again with a 48 yard TD from Kevin Koelbel to put Holmen up 21-0. On the kickoff Holmen would successfully complete an onside kick and immediately take over on the 47 yard line. Despite the good field position, some penalties and a strong Blugold defense would make it impossible for them to score. The remainder of the first would remain scoreless and into a good portion of the second.
Into the second, with 9:45 left on the clock, Holmen would connect with the endzone once again with a beautiful 23 yard pass to Kevin Koelbel to go up 28-0.
Although Aquinas would receive the kickoff on their possession a little miscommunication would cause the snap to be overshot and the ball would roll towards the endzone, with blue and white players all around it would be hard to determine who would cover the ball, however the refs would determine that Holmen recovered the ball which would result in a safety and would give the Vikings two points putting them up 30-0.
The biggest play of the half would come with 4:20 left on the clock when once again, Kevin Koelbel would take the ball 86 yards to the endzone and put the Vikings up 44-0.
Holmen rolls over Aquinas winning with a score of 58-0.
