The Eau Claire fire department says it has seen more fires this holiday season than past years. The department’s “Keep the Wreath Green” campaign ended today.
Every year, a wreath with green lights is placed on the outside of fire stations throughout Eau Claire. Each time there’s a structure fire in the city, a green light is replaced with a red one.
Firefighters say there’s a common theme with fires during the holidays.
Tim Deziel: “Generally speaking, one of the most common fires that we always have is cooking fires. And of course during the holiday season, we’re all cooking more and more in the kitchen and things like that.”
This year, the department responded to five fires between thanksgiving and New Year’s.
