14-year-old Eau Claire boy dead after Wednesday shooting

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – An Eau Claire teenager is shot and killed. A man taken into custody as part of the investigation could face charges in the teen’s death.

Police officers say negligent use of a firearm led to 14-year-old Marwan Washington’s death Wednesday afternoon.

Officers responded to a report of a gunshot wound in the 28-hundred block of Terry Lane on Eau Claire’s Northside.

Officers’ lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful. Washington died at the scene.

The man taken into custody is 26-year-old Austin Vang.

He could be charged with first-degree reckless homicide.

ECPD Deputy Chief Derek Thomas says Vang is the boyfriend of the victim’s sister.

Police officers say this is an isolated incident.

Deputy Chief Derek Thomas of Eau Claire Police Department said, “It was a senseless act it was tragic our condolences go out to the family, the friends, the Eau Claire Area School District.

The Eau Claire Area School District says Washington had not attended school in the district the past two years but was planning to return this fall as an incoming freshman.

Officers are working with school staff to provide support services.
