LA CROSSE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – The calendar has flipped to November and that means one thing here in the upper Midwest: Alternate side parking! For most of the area, alternate side parking ordinances went into effect as of midnight, November 1st. A select few start a little later in the season.

As a refresher, alternate side parking means you park on the same side of the street as the date on the calendar. If the date will be an odd number, then you park on the odd side of the street. If the date will be an even number, then park on the even side of the street.

Clear as mud? Maybe this, from the City of Tomah Alternate Side Parking Information Printout, “There are 3 important numbers to remember. The first number is the date, the second is the time and the third is building numbers. (Overnight) is the time that determines the date, not 5 p.m., 6 p.m., or 7 p.m. when you might be parking your car for the night, but (Overnight) the following day.

Here is an example: the date is the 10th when you park your car in the evening before midnight but when it becomes (overnight) it is now the following day with a date of the 11th so your vehicle should be parked on the odd side of the street. Remember when parking your vehicle overnight on the street the date changes after midnight and the restriction goes into effect at (overnight).”

LA CROSSE

La Crosse is the one exception to the normal alternate side parking rules around the area. La Crosse goes with the Snow Emergency method. Meaning, if there is an emergency declared, then Alternate side parking goes into effect. You can find out whether or not the city will be ticketing by checking local radio stations, or by watching Fox 25/48 where the information will be dispersed when necessary.
