American Red Cross faces severe shortage; blood donors needed

Local News

Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – The American Red Cross continues its push to erase a severe blood shortage.

During the pandemic, some hospitals and clinics delayed surgeries and non-essential procedures.

As people return for care, the Red Cross is asking people of all blood types to donate.

Blood is perishable making it hard for blood banks like the red cross to stockpile.

Volunteer Dan Schillinger says the amount it’s using is impacting the reserve supply.

“In the last three months, the red cross has distributed about 75,000 units more than we would normally distribute during that period of time, so that’s really taken our reserve supply and reduced it dramatically and that’s what we’re trying to get back up is to have that reserve supply back up,” said Schillinger.

Through the month of June, blood donors can get a five-dollar amazon gift card.
