ST. CROIX FALLS, Wis. (WLAX/WEAU) – An Arizona woman is now charged in the homicide of a woman in Polk County almost 40 years ago. The Polk County Sheriff’s office says investigators worked with officers in Maricopa County, Arizona, to arrest Mary Josephine Bailey yesterday.
Bailey, who is 80 years old, is charged with one count of 1st-degree murder in the death of Yvonne Menke. Menke was shot and killed in December of 1985 as she left her home in St. Croix Falls to go to work. She was 45 years old.
According to the criminal complaint, following the murder, law enforcement interviewed several people who said Menke and Bailey were both in a relationship with the same man.
After reopening the case, investigators determined that based on their “love triangle”, witness statements, and evidence collected at the scene that showed boot prints closely matching boots recovered from Bailey, investigators believe she is responsible for killing Menke. Bailey will be extradited to Wisconsin to face the charges.
