An area school community is in mourning today. Tragic news about one of its own, Gene Power, band director at Eau Claire Memorial high school, was killed overnight in an automobile crash in Dodge County. Details of the accident will not be released until tomorrow.
Power joined the staff at Memorial this school year but his involvement in youth music in the community goes back years and is extensive. About a decade ago he worked with the band program at North high school. He’s also served as assistant conductor for the Chippewa Valley Youth Symphony and as orchestra director for the Chippewa Valley theater guild and the Eau Claire Children’s Theater. In 2002, he graduated from UW-Eau Claire with a degree in music.
Eau Claire school board member Joe Luginbill: “He was a truly good man. I mourn his loss as a friend, but also his loss to the Eau Claire area school district and the Eau Claire community.”
Eau Claire Memorial Principal Dave Oldenberg says counseling and other support services will be available to students, faculty, and staff when classes resume tomorrow.
