SPRING VALLEY Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – Bond conditions have been set for a Wisconsin woman charged with amputating a nursing home patient’s foot without permission. 38-year-old Mary Brown of Durand made an initial court appearance yesterday. Her bond was set at 150 thousand dollars.

According to records, a 62-year-old man was admitted to a Spring Valley nursing home in March with severe frostbite on his feet. Brown allegedly cut off one of his feet in May, without the man’s permission, and without a doctor’s order.

Nurses interviewed as part of the investigation said Brown removed the foot for compassion, not out of malice. The facility director said Brown did not document the incident, and that the procedure should have been done by a doctor.

In June, investigators were notified of the man’s death. Brown is charged with felony physical abuse of an elder person, intentionally causing great bodily harm and mayhem. She faces up to 40 years in prison on each felony charge. She is set to return to court next week.
