Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – Distracted driving is on the rise and seatbelt use is declining, according to information from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. That’s why the DOT created Buckle Up Phone Down Day.

Two simple steps while driving can be lifesaving, according to Wis-DOT officials. Those steps are putting on your seatbelt and putting down your phone. Secretary Craig Thompson says not following these two steps increases car crash fatalities.

“We were up above ninety percent seatbelt usage, and now we are down to about eighty-eight percent. Even with that, if you think about ninety percent of the people driving with a seatbelt on, but of our fatalities about half of them involved people that did not have a seatbelt on.”

Thompson says one of the goals of Buckle Up Phone Down Day is to get people to encourage others in their lives to also follow these steps.
