Clark County man arrested in highway worker’s death

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – The highway worker killed after being hit by a car on the job is identified.

Early Sunday morning, two Clark County highway workers were clearing a tree blocking a road.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office says just after 1 AM, the two workers were struck by a driver believed to be intoxicated.

57-year-old Russel Opelt died at the scene.

60-year-old David Murphy was taken to a nearby hospital for his injuries.

The driver, 28-year-old Cory Neumeller, is in the Clark County Jail awaiting an initial court appearance.

He could be charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle.
