Colten Treu’s request to have his pleas withdrawn not accepted

CHIPPEWA COUNTY, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – Chippewa County’s District Attorney says 23-year-old Colten Treu’s request to have his pleas withdrawn should not be accepted.

The motion was filed Tuesday by DA Wade Newell, in response to Treu’s request last month to withdraw his guilty pleas.

In March of last year, Treu was sentenced to 54 years tied to a hit and run in November 2018 in Lake Hallie that left four people dead and another seriously hurt.

In his motion to withdraw his pleas, Treu contends his attorneys told him he would still be able to appeal the denial of the change of venue motion if he changed his pleas. Adding had he known he would lose the ability to appeal. He would not have changed his pleas and would have gone to trial.

A motion hearing is set for March 3.
