LA CROSSE/EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – Health officials say two more people in Eau Claire County who recently tested positive for COVID-19 were found to have the variant strain B117. This is the strain that spreads more easily and more quickly than other variants.
In a statement, the Eau Claire City-County Health Department says the two people are unrelated to one another. As well as the first case of the variant strain detected in the county last month. One of the new positive cases is a teenager and the other is in his or her 50s. Neither person is hospitalized with the virus. City-County Health Department Director Lieske Giese hopes the spread of the new variant can be minimized.
Giese said, “We expect that, as we see more of this UK variant strain and others, that we likely will start seeing some spikes of COVID-19 happening. We don’t test every sample for the COVID-19 advance. In the state, only a small percentage of samples do get tested. So, we won’t know about everyone, but we’re going to be watching.”
Eau Claire County reports four new cases of COVID-19 today.
