WAUSAU, Wisc. (WEAU/WLAX) — The Hmong American Center, along with the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Central Wisconsin, on Saturday marked the opening of a new Cultural Meal Site.

The Cultural Meal Site will offer nutritious Southeast Asian dishes once a week beginning in 2022. The meals will be catered toward elders and individuals with disabilities.

It won’t just be a chance to eat, but also a chance to interact with other people.

“We know that our elders out there, especially during this pandemic, many of them are struggling with isolation and depression,” Yee Leng Xiong, executive director of the Hmong American Center, said. “Being able to provide these types of foods, we also allow them a chance to come out and socialize, at the same time making sure none of them goes hungry.”

Unlike other food pantries, the Meal Center will be aimed toward the Southeast Asian population with foods that are more in line with their diets. It will also give others a chance to try a different type of healthy food, Xiong said.
