Downtown Eau Claire Inc. hosts this year’s ‘Window Competition’

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – Several downtown Eau Claire businesses are decked out for the holidays. They’re competing in this year’s ‘Window Competition’ Hosted by Downtown Eau Claire, Inc.

First News at Nine, Max Cotton spoke with some of the participants and shows us some of their holiday magic.

Downtown Eau Claire is ready for the holidays. For the second straight year, several businesses have decorated their front windows in competition.

Downtown Eau Claire, Inc.’s Dustin Olson says it’s a way families can get in the holiday spirit during the pandemic.

Olson said, “It really helps to add to this whole feeling of the holidays and especially in a year where it’s been difficult to gather and get together, this is something that you can still do safely while passing by on the street.”

Kadie Schultz bought Chippewa Valley floral last year. This is her first year decorating windows.

Schultz said, “I love Christmas so it’s my favorite time of year anyways. I always love decorating for Christmas, Christmas movies, like it’s my favorite time of year.”

She says the competition is great way bring some holiday cheer downtown.

“I think it’s a blast and I think it’s a great way to get everybody involved downtown and to get the whole downtown area in the festive Christmas season,” said Schultz.

Schultz isn’t the only decorator excited to see these windows.

Lazy Monk Brewing Owner Theresa Frank says decorating these windows brings back memories of growing up in Eau Claire.

Frank said, “It’s amazing. It reminds me of old town Eau Claire. I think more and more people should do this. I remember as a child seeing a lot of people decorate and I think it’s just something very unique.”

She says the entire competition is great, but her favorite part is seeing families walk by enjoying her display.

“To have a family come up to the window and you see their eyes light up, you see a twinkle, it means the world to us because we are all about community. We always have been,” said Frank.

But in the end, it’s not about the competition. It’s about the memories these windows and the holiday season create.

“I think a lot of memories are going to be made this year and they’re memories in a positive way. Memories that kids moving forward will actually remember and talk to their kids about. It’s not about the presents. It’s not about the gifts under the tree.  It’s about being with your family and the blessings that you have,” said Frank.

The winner gets a thousand dollars in free advertising from Downtown Eau Claire Inc.
