EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – Labor Day looks different in the Chippewa Valley this year thanks to COVID-19.
The Greater West Central Area Labor Council usually celebrates the holiday with a picnic at Phoenix Park in Eau Claire. This year, organizers canceled the event which usually draws in about 200 people.
However, Labor Council President, Philip Swanhurst says celebrating Labor Day is more important than ever this year, especially acknowledging the labor put in by essential workers during this pandemic.
“This year we are asking people to consider celebrating Labor Day to acknowledge what labor has built for us for over previous decades before us. What they have fought for and gotten in union contracts and just basically by building the middle class in America so we all have a better life and a better standard of living,” said Swanhurst.
The Greater West Central Area Labor Council is also marking the holiday with a drive to support local food banks like Feed My People.
