Eau Claire city leaders taking steps to combat anti-AAPI hate

Local News

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – With an increase in hate crimes across the country, the city of Eau Claire has committed to do more to make Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders feel welcome in the community.

In March, Interim City Manager Dave Solberg and Police Chief Matt Rokus sent out an open letter promising change.

In the weeks since, Eau Claire Police have had Hmong cultural training.

The city and Eau Claire County have also hired a new equity, diversity, and inclusion coordinator.

Solberg said, “Times are different, covid has changed a lot of things, some of the injustices that have occurred over the last year. I think society has reached a tipping point where we’re serious and we need to move forward with actionable change and measurable change and real change.”

Solberg says the new equity, diversity and inclusion coordinator will start later this month.
