Eau Claire Police identify victim in fatal shooting, suspects still not located

Local News

Police have identified the person killed in a shooting on Eau Claire’s southside as they continue to search for the suspects.

Police say 29-year-old Edwin James Garcia-Smith died of a gunshot wound.  A 32-year-old woman was also shot and is expected to survive. There were also three children in the home at the time. They were not hurt.

On Friday night, officers responded to reports of a woman screaming for help near the 4600 block of Kappus Drive.

Police say two suspects broke into a residence in a multi-unit apartment building. They say the investigation has determined this was not a random crime.

“We rely on the general public to help us with the investigation. They are our eyes and ears within the community,” said Deputy Chief Derek Thomas. “So we hope that if anyone knows anything suspicious that they’ve seen or heard within that area that they contact us.”

Anyone with information on the two suspects are asked to contact the Eau Claire Police Department.
