EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – A Chippewa Valley Police officer says he was at the right place at the right time, when he likely saved a woman’s life.

Zac Becker is an officer with the Eau Claire Police Department.

He was patrolling near phoenix park Sunday night when someone told officer Becker his girlfriend was missing.

Becker says he then heard a splash. He saw the woman floating unconscious in the Eau Claire River. Becker jumped in and pulled the woman to shore.

Today, Becker says it was an instinctive reaction on his part.

“Initially, I assumed that somebody was just down there that jumped in and they were swimming around themselves. When i saw her that she was unconscious, i was definitely concerned for her safety. It’s kind of those things where you just react and try to help somebody. That’s what i would want to do for my sister and somebody in my family,” said Becker.

Officer Becker says a “medical issue” was the likely cause for the woman falling into the river. Emergency crews eventually arrived and were able to give her medical attention.
