Eau Claire sees spike in vehicle break-ins in September

Local News

The Eau Claire Police Department says in September there were more than three times the normal amount of reports of vehicle thefts in the city.

Police say most of the thefts occurred during the overnight hours and in the west district of the city.

Most of the items that have been reported stolen are small, including loose change, cash and some electronics.

The ECPD says on an average month they receive 14 reports of vehicle thefts. They received 43 reports last month.

“Our crime analyst is paying close attention to this issue and has been paying attention to the trends over the past few years,” said officer Bridget Coit. “So 43 is definitely a spike for us and the crime analyst is paying attention to that and getting that information out to our patrol lieutenants and is getting that information down to our patrol officers.”

Police believe it is a group of people who are targeting vehicles to steal from.
