EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – An Eau Claire woman is hoping to change Wisconsin’s birth certificate forms.
Jennifer Engedal started a petition calling on the state legislature to change laws so the form uses gender-neutral terms when listing parents. Currently, the birth certificate lists “mother” and “father”, though it can be changed.
However, another form new mothers fill out only lists “mother” and husband.” Engedal says it’s important people speak up to make things easier for same-sex couples.
“I feel like if you’re a kind, compassionate person, no matter what your beliefs are, if something is hurting someone else, you would care enough to want to make a difference in that person’s life,” said Engedal.
In 2017, The U.S. Supreme Court ruled states’ birth certificates had to recognize married same-sex couples. State lawmakers introduced a bill in the 20-19 20-20 legislative session to change the form.
It did not receive a hearing.
