EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – An Eau Claire footbridge remains closed as city engineers come up with a solution.
The high bridge closed Monday due to handrail damage and cracks and buckles in its pavement.
The bridge connects to the east and west sides of the Chippewa River. It’s widely used by pedestrians and bicyclists.
City of Eau Claire Interim Engineering Director Leah Ness says there is no telling how long the bridge will stay closed.
Crews are investigating how to repair the structure or find out if they need to start from scratch.
Ness said, “We want to make sure we do cover all of our bases. If we are repairing a 140-year-old structure what may happen in the future related to that as well, so we want to look at the present but also the future.”
People are asked to cross the river at Madison Street or Phoenix Park.
Waterways beneath the bridge are closed as well.
