Eau Claire police say there has been a wave of more violent crimes lately.
It includes two high speed chases, an officer-involved shooting, and an armed robbery. Since the start of 2016, the police department has handled more than 2700 assigned cases. That’s higher than the same time frame the past five years.
Chief Jerry Staniszewski says the rise in crime is abnormal.
“The violent crimes are typically low. In the past, we’ve seen a lot of property crimes in the city of Eau Claire. You’ve seen a shift in the more serious crimes and the violent crimes. We recognize that and that’s where we shift our focus to make sure we address those,”
Chief Staniszewski says his department holds bi-weekly meetings to develop strategies to deal with individual crime trends.
