FDA says it is unnecessary to reuse N-95 masks

Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – A mask surplus is allowing a change in guidance for health care providers. The FDA is recommending N-95 masks should no longer be reused now that there’s an increase in supply around the country.

The government says hospitals should try to return to one mask per patient.

Dr. Todd Kowalski with Gundersen Health System doesn’t think there will be a desperate need for masks moving forward.

“I really don’t think we’re anticipating mask shortages anytime in the near future, and that’s a good thing if we can have some of these masks in warehouses and in places where we can use them if we ever need a surge of them in the future,” said Kowalski.

The recommendation is not an order, so hospitals are still allowed to re-use N-95 masks, but the FDA may require single-use masks in the coming months.
