Four people from Illinois were rescued on the Kickapoo River near Rockton Sunday afternoon.
According to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Department, the group was kayaking when their kayaks capsized because overnight rains caused the river to rise rapidly.
A member of that group, 49-year old Vicki Hanson was able to place a 9-1-1 call and say they were stuck in a log jam.
The La Farge Fire Department began Swiftwater rescue efforts and were able to find the kayakers on rock embankments on both sides of the river.
Safety ropes were deployed, and the stranded kayakers were hoisted to safety. All parties were treated and released from the scene.
Sheriff Spears wants to remind people to check weather conditions before heading out on the river and that flooding from last year and years past has caused more problems in navigating the river.
