EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – Two longtime friends in Chippewa Falls and Eau Claire are on a mission to make sure families staying in the neonatal intensive care unit have everything they need.

Rebecca Poquette and Cassie Smiskey have been putting together welcome bags for families at the Saint Paul Children’s NICU for five years now.

They started by helping 40 families. This year they plan to deliver 150 bags full of snacks, food, and books among other essentials.

Poquette said, “It’s a terrifying experience. You can’t always touch your baby they’re in an incubator so the books, at least you can read to your baby”

Smiskey said, “St Paul Children’s Hospital services children from all over and many in our community so you may not know it but people that are your neighbors, classmates at school, church friends may have had a child that was in the NICU at some point.”
