LA CROSSE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – A respiratory disease that’s more common later in the year has an early start in La Crosse County.
RSV is a respiratory virus that affects children two years old and younger.
The disease usually begins spreading in November, but Gundersen Health System has been treating patients since July.
Dr. Nicole Hennessy thinks the surge relates to the lack of cases last year.
Dr. Nicole Hennessy, Gundersen Health System Pediatric Hospitalist said, “Now we’re seeing it come back, but we have kind of two groups, the normal group we would expect to get it, kind of, for the first time this year, and also the group that probably should’ve gotten it last year and didn’t because they really didn’t get sick.”
Due to the early start of RSV season, staff at Gundersen fear the disease may be active from now through winter.
