La Crosse man charged in Onalaska standoff with law enforcement

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – A La Crosse man has been charged with intentionally pointing a weapon at law enforcement and failure to comply.

61-year-old John Czapiewski appeared in la crosse county court Monday. He’s charged with 14 counts after a standoff with Onalaska police Sunday.

According to the Onalaska Police Department, officers responded to a home around 7:00 AM yesterday after a family reported an estranged relative sleeping on the back porch.

Police say when officers arrived and woke the man up, he pulled out a handgun. Officers led the family out of their home and alerted neighbors to shelter in place.

Police then requested help from a tactical unit. The La Crosse County Emergency Response Team who tried to talk the man into leaving the porch.

Officers say the suspect then pointed his gun through the porch window, leading the ERT to fire five times and throw gas.

Then officers say the suspect came out with minor injuries from the gas and was arrested.

Chapeski has his preliminary hearing on April 14.
