LA CROSSE Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – City leaders in La Crosse are working on a new plan to create more affordable housing. A resolution is calling for the purchase of the former Marine Credit Union building on Monitor Street.

2.6 million dollars of federal funding would be used to buy the property and renovate it to add 30 housing units. The city previously planned to purchase the former chamber of commerce building and a southside motel to turn into affordable housing, but both plans fell through.

The city’s Community Development Committee recommended the resolution for approval yesterday afternoon. The City Council will have final say on the matter at its October meeting.
