SPARTA, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – Leon Country Floors co-owners Jeff and Joanne Bohnert, parents of made history last year when they provided a large donation to Sparta Area Cancer Support (SACS). The small business owners agreed to match their earnings from the month-long garage sale they hosted in July, and the number was not small! Last year, the team raised over $6,000, and with the matched contribution, their donation came to over $12,000.
“We never thought it would’ve been that much, it was a major shock to us,” said Joanne Bohnert, head organizer.
Over the years, the Bohnerts have donated a lot of resources to SACS, and as a local business owner, they wanted to donate something to an organization that would keep the money in the community. As Jeff planted the idea last year, Joanne agreed that this would be special.
“What’s unique about this whole thing, is the money stays local,” said Bohnert. “It doesn’t go out of the area, and surrounding communities always offer their assistance. It’s just so incredible to see everyone come together to help out SACS.
Realizing that SACS month is in July and that Joanne is a board member of SACS, the husband and wife knew this was perfect for the organization and the people in need. So, the team kicked off their second annual fundraiser in 2021, and with more word of mouth and amazing community contribution, the donation would be bigger and better than last years’.
The Leon Country Floors Team received an abundance of donations for their month-long garage sale last year, and 2021 is looking even better, and there are still two more days to donate!
“In 2020, COVID-19 really kicked us into gear about doing this. We knew there were families in need. Whether it may be paying for rent, providing money to cancer patients, medical bills, utilities, and transportation. It’s just a great thing to do, and we are always looking for volunteers,” said Bohnert.
To find more about SACS, you can go to a monthly meeting that is open to the public or visit SACS’ Facebook page here.
The Leon Country Floors team will be back next year and will be looking to beat this year’s goal.
“It’s a lot of work – all of the organizing and all, but it’s extremely fun doing it,” said Bohnert. I plan to be doing this as long as I can”
