Local childcare facilities affected by labor shortage

Local News

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – The lack of childcare workers is being felt in western Wisconsin.

Daycare facilities like the YMCA of the Chippewa Valley are feeling the effects of not having enough staff in their classrooms.

The Y says the lack of qualified staff could be for a variety of reasons– including low wages. Other industries have raised their wages to attract more potential employees which is something not everyone can do.

Caroline Wee, YMCA Association Child Care Services Director said, “Prior to COVID-19 you had a competition between daycare centers for staff and now we’re competing with every business, every industry because they’re all short-staffed. They’re offering hiring bonuses and upping their pay and so now we have quadruple the competitions as far as staff goes”

Wee says childcare programs at the YMCA in both Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls are on limited capacity and are currently full.
