EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – The suspect in the shooting death of an Eau Claire man is now charged.
55-year-old Selwyn Smith appeared in Eau Claire County Court yesterday morning and is charged with first-degree reckless homicide and possession of a firearm by a felon. Cash bond was set at 10-thousand dollars.
Smith is accused of shooting 38-year-old Freddie Flowers.
The criminal complaint states that officers responded to dodge street for a welfare check Friday after a mail carrier reported hearing three gunshots
When officers arrived, they noticed a man lying on the ground dead. While working the scene, smith and a woman passenger pulled into the driveway. Smith told officers he lived there, and he was the shooter.
He said flowers had tried to kick in his door, they fought, and he was defending himself. He said he had no intention of killing flowers.
