CALEDONIA, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – Authorities in Racine County say a man shot and killed another man at a gas station before fleeing and eventually dying in a shootout with an undercover investigator.

The incident happened around 7:30 Tuesday morning just off Interstate 94 at the pilot travel center in the village of Caledonia. That’s about 20 miles south of Milwaukee.

The Racine County Sheriff says a 32-year-old man approached and “viciously executed” a 22-year-old man putting gas in his car.

The suspect in the shooting fled the scene and ended up at another gas station where he opened fire on an undercover police detective.

The two men exchanged gunfire, leaving the suspect dead and the investigator wounded.

Christopher Schmaling, Racine County Sheriff said, “I personally watched this video, ladies, and gentlemen, of this horrific event. I found it to be extremely disturbing and heart-wrenching to view. And our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. I cannot begin to imagine the pain and the suffering you’re experiencing.”

The Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation will lead the outside investigation into this incident.
