MILWAUKEE Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – A Milwaukee police officer was shot and killed yesterday morning while trying to arrest an armed robbery suspect. That robbery took place Monday and involved a 19-year-old suspect, identified by the Milwaukee Police Department as Terrell Thompson.

Officials say just before 1 am, officers tracked Thompson down and were attempting to make an arrest when he ran away. One of the officers, 37-year-old Peter Jerving, caught up with Thompson and a struggle ensued.

Milwaukee PD says both Thompson and Jerving fired shots. Both were hit. Jerving was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries. Thompson died at the scene. The Milwaukee Police Department says it’s unclear whether Thompson died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, or from one of Jerving’s shots. An investigation is ongoing.
