MONROE COUNTY Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – Every day this week, we’ll be bringing you stories from Monroe County as part of our County by County series. Today, we head to one village, where local health care is getting an upgrade.
A Monroe County health care provider is hoping to improve its services in rural communities. Scenic Bluffs Community Health Centers opened its first location in Cashton in 1994 and expanded to the village of Norwalk soon after.
Ceo Kim Hawthorne says Scenic Bluffs offers medical, dental, and behavioral health care to patients who struggle to pay for primary care.
“Our mission is to make sure that we reduce health inequities, health disparities, and we serve populations that are underserved. Being in the Norwalk community is an opportunity for us to assure access to care for people in these rural, more rural communities.”
The Norwalk health center has been in operation since 1999, but the facility hasn’t had a significant upgrade since then. Thanks to funding from the American Rescue Plan Act, Scenic Bluffs is planning a makeover of its Norwalk location.
“We’re going to be updating our clinic facilities to provide expanded services in medical, behavioral health, chiropractic, and eventually add other services.”
The renovation project represents a more than 580,000-dollar investment in the Norwalk community. Village President Levi Helgren is glad Scenic Bluffs is continuing its commitment to Norwalk.
“We’re truly blessed to have this facility here, it’s not something that all these smaller communities such as ourselves can say that they have to offer.”
Hawthorne hopes updating the health center will help the future growth of the Village.
“Reinvestment in this community is going to bring more people into this community. As we grow our practice, people will come here, they will stop at the gas stations, they will stop at the restaurants, and that brings revenue into the village, and that’s an economic opportunity both for the citizens of the community, but also for the community itself.”
The project is expected to be completed by January of 2023. Scenic Bluffs will continue to provide services to the community while construction is ongoing, but they will be limited until the project is complete.
