New details released on Racine County gas station shooting

RACINE COUNTY, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – We’re getting multiple calls of a male that was shot outside a gas station, there may be a male party that’s still shooting.

New information tonight on Tuesday’s Racine County shooting.

We’ve now learned the gas station shooter tried to steal three vehicles and shot himself in the head after a shootout with an undercover sheriff’s deputy

The Wisconsin DOJ says when 32-year-old John McCarthy of Hartland exchanged gunfire with an undercover deputy who was pumping gas at the time, both were hit, and McCarthy shot himself in the head.

They add that after McCarthy shot and killed 22-year-old Anthony Griger of elkhorn who was pumping gas at another gas station moments before, he tried to leave in Griger’s vehicle, but couldn’t operate it.

The DOJ says he tried to carjack another person’s vehicle, but they drove away.
