The pilot of a small aircraft has died following a crash in Vernon County.
Vernon County Sheriff, John Spears reports a 911 call came in around 6:30 p.m. Monday for a plane crash near the Viroqua Municipal Airport.
Witnesses say they saw the aircraft take off from the airport, and heard the engine stop shortly after.
Emergency responders were able to locate the plane in a nearby field in the Town of Jefferson. The Viroqua Fire Department put out a small fire. The aircraft was identified as an Experimental Rotorcraft Sportcopter Vortex.
According to the sheriff, the rotor became detached from the body of the aircraft upon impact.
In addition to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
The name of the person killed is being withheld, pending notification of family members.
