EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – This afternoon, the Eau Claire Board of Health held an emergency meeting to discuss proposed ordinances related to the county’s local health order.
Under the proposed ordinances, local health orders would have more legislative oversight from the county board and the city council, more public comment would be available and enforcement against the order would be easier.
While Eau Claire city attorneys say it would not give more power to the health director or department. Following the board of health meeting, the ordinances will go to the full Eau Claire city council and full Eau Claire county board.
In response to these ordinances, a group of about 100 people gathered outside the County Government Center in Eau Claire to protest. Several protestors say they think expanding the health department’s power would infringe on their rights.
Some say they believe health should be a personal responsibility, preferring the government not to step in.
