BARRON COUNTY Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – A 16-year-old boy is in custody after a crash that killed a 14-year-old-girl and hurt two others in Barron County. The crash happened around seven last night, just north of Cameron.

A 14-year-old girl was killed, two other teens were seriously injured, and another teen is in custody following a rollover crash in Barron County. On Monday night around 7-pm, the Barron County 911 center received calls of a one vehicle rollover just north of Cameron. Residents say they heard the crash.

“I was watching football. I heard something sounded like a loud rattle and it was just big cranking. And then I looked out the window and saw a big cloud of dust. When I told my wife that I think somebody had an accident and we took off, went over there, we heard somebody yell, call 911.”

“We had two helicopters that came in and landed right out here on this land, and there was firetrucks and cops and ambulances.”

The Barron County Sheriff says it appears the 16-year-old boy was under the influence of a controlled substance and was speeding when he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll. Two of the girls were flown to a St. Paul hospital. A third is at a Wisconsin medical center.

“One helicopter landed and then another helicopter came in and it was just chaotic. I mean, there was pieces, parts everywhere. I mean, just the rescue EMT, they did a great job. They were on right when they got there. And it’s just scary.”

The 16-year-old boy is being held in a detention center in Eau Claire. The rice lake area school district released a statement saying the girl who died was a student. The statement says staff members will be available for students who need support.

“My heart goes out to the families, and I pray that the kids will be okay.”

The Barron County Sheriff says this crash remains under investigation and is being reconstructed by the Wisconsin State Patrol.
